The Centre for Kurdish Progress and Solidarity Action hosted a compelling discussion on the role of Kurdish women and activists in Iran’s pro-democracy movement. Chaired by Steve Yemm MP, the event explored the transformative slogan “Jin, Jiyan, Azadî” (“Women, Life, Freedom”) and its evolution from a regional call for liberation into a universal cry for equality, justice, and democratic reform.
Speakers highlighted the courage and leadership of Kurdish women at the forefront of resistance, often at great personal risk, and examined the broader implications for social justice and human rights across the Middle East. The discussion underscored the moral and practical responsibilities of international actors, including the UK government and the Labour Party, in supporting democratic movements, protecting political prisoners, and promoting global solidarity.
Through first-hand experiences and legal perspectives, the panellists emphasised the need for ongoing advocacy, collaboration with civil society, and the translation of international solidarity into concrete action. Attendees engaged in a lively Q&A, exploring ways to strengthen democratic freedoms, elevate women’s voices, and advance human rights in repressive contexts.
The event reinforced that the Kurdish struggle for equality is not only a regional issue but a test of global commitment to dignity, democracy, and inclusive governance.
