Held at the Leonardo Royal Hotel London Tower Bridge, the discussion brought together Labour representatives, councillors, business voices and conference delegates to explore the important role that small and medium-sized businesses can play in supporting London’s economy, strengthening local communities and creating good jobs.

The roundtable featured contributions from Deirdre Costigan MP; Councillor Steve Cowan, Leader of Hammersmith and Fulham Council; and Bassam Mahfouz AM, Member of the London Assembly.

The session was chaired by Professor Andrew Summers, who guided a wide-ranging and constructive discussion about the opportunities and challenges facing small businesses across London.

Speakers discussed the pressures confronting high-street businesses, including rising operating costs, business rates, access to finance and the need for a stronger partnership between government, local authorities and the small business community.

The discussion also considered how councils and the Labour Government can support entrepreneurship, encourage investment, improve access to public procurement and ensure that economic growth benefits every part of London.

Participants highlighted the wider contribution that SMEs make beyond the economy. Small businesses create employment, support local supply chains, bring life to high streets and town centres, and often serve as important anchors within their communities.

SME4Labour Chair Ibrahim Dogus said:

“We were delighted to bring together such an experienced panel for an important and timely conversation about the future of small businesses in London.

“Small and medium-sized businesses are at the heart of our communities, but too many continue to face rising costs and unnecessary barriers to growth. It is vital that their experiences help shape decisions at every level of government.

“I would like to thank Deirdre Costigan MP, Councillor Steve Cowan, Bassam Mahfouz AM and our chair, Professor Andrew Summers, for their thoughtful contributions. I am also grateful to everyone who joined us and helped make the discussion such a success.”

The roundtable formed part of SME4Labour’s continuing programme of engagement connecting the small business community with Labour parliamentarians, councillors, trade unions and policymakers.

SME4Labour will continue organising discussions across the country to ensure that SME owners have opportunities to share their experiences, contribute ideas and help develop policies that support thriving businesses, stronger high streets and sustainable economic growth.
