SME4Labour and Kurdistan Regional Government UK Representation Reception: Kurdistan Region Friendship With The Labour Party
Event Summary:
The Kurdistan Regional Government in Iraq hosted a reception to discuss the friendship between the Labour Party and the Kurdistan Region, attended by Bambos Charalambous. The Kurdish region in Iraq has played an important part in UK foreign policy in the last three decades, both under Labour and Conservative Governments. John Major's decision in 1991 to push for a no-fly-zone and safe haven began this process. The APPG has done very vital work in this also. English is widely spoken in Kurdistan and many look to the UK for support so they may better stand on their own two feet. The region has been on a remarkable journey from the object of genocide to the forgers of their own fate.
There is an understanding of the need to diversify the region's economy, bringing in alternative energy sources, and bringing in greater tourism.
It's vital that Kurdish rights are protected. We need a strong Kurdistan region in Iraq.
