SME4Labour and Amazon Digital Services Fringe: SMEs and Digital Transformation

We were joined by Clive Richardson from AWS, Jo Mowat from Airbox systems, Dan White from Cynalogic,  MP’s Bill Esterson, Yasmin Qureshi and Naz Shah and Hackney Mayor Philip Glanville. The discussion centred around the way that digital transformation has positively impacted SME’s.

Clive opened the discussion by noting that the internet has transformed the way that people do business in the UK. Computing power enables business to perform logistical tasks in far less time than previously required, enabling businesses to both innovate and to perform their usual tasks far easier. The market is also flexible which enables businesses to use the most appropriate technology for their businesses rather than having to spend massive amounts of money on tech that may not be appropriate.

Jo noted the importance of geolocating, particularly its relevance to the emergency services. AWS provides this service, which enables emergency services to locate victims of crimes or accidents more easily. As well as ensuring that emergency workers are protected as best as they can be.

Dan observed that digitalisation has moved forward rapidly in the last decade. He praised the work that AWS have done to combat organised crime by assisting the police. This particularly applies to cybercrime, such as noting when suspicious purchases are made.

Philip discussed the work that has happened in London around this issue, he noted that the GLA, Met Polcie and local councils work together to share information using AWS related to crimes to both help the police and to protect vulnerable people & communities from exploitation. Philip strongly advocated for increasing these collaborations using digital systems, he said that it has made his job as mayor far easier and advocated for this to be adopted throughout the country.
