The S&D Group organised an event last week, 21st April 2015, entitled ‘Progressive Solutions to Countering Violent Extremism’
It was held in light of the recent terrorist attacks across Europe and amidst a climate of debate and discussion the issue currently in the European Parliament.
The aim of the event was to explore progressive ways of combatting violent extremism, particularly due to the growing risks of endangering human rights and the targeting of minority groups in the fight against terrorism.
The S&D group, of which Labour MEPs are members of, is calling for more democracy not less whilst fighting violent extremism.
I, myself, spoke of the need to empower communities to effectively tackle the issue. It is only when we support communities and families with the necessary back up and resources that they can then effectively push back against extreme elements amongst them. Targeting whole communities only works to discredit the majority who are peaceful, law abiding citizens.
The discussions held in this conference will become part of a Parliamentary debate held in Strasbourg this week on Europe’s Security Agenda. Follow me on Twitter to stay tuned.
